NIFA Now Accepting Proposals for the BFRDP
USDA’s National Institute of Food & Agriculture (NIFA) has released the Request for Applications for the 2018 BFRDP. An estimated $17.7 million is available to support the delivery of education, mentoring, and technical assistance programs to help beginning farmers and ranchers in the US as they enter, establish, build, and manage successful farm and ranch enterprises.
Who is Eligible to Apply: BFRDP program applicants must be a collaborative state, tribal, local, or regionally-based network or partnership of qualified public and/or private entities which may include: a State Cooperative Extension Services; Federal, State, or tribal agencies, community based organizations (CBOs); nongovernmental organizations (NGOs); junior and four-year colleges or universities or foundations maintained by college or university; and private for-profit organizations. Beginning Farmers or Ranchers (BFR) are individuals or entities who have not operated a farm or ranch or have operated a farm or ranch for not more than 10 years.
Funding Levels: USDA anticipates that up to $17.7 million will be awarded. Applicants may request a maximum amount of $200,000 per year for up to three years for large standard grants and $100,000 per year for up to three years for small standard grants. For Educational Enhancement Teams, applicants may request a maximum amount of $200,000 per year for up to three years.
Match: Applicants must provide a match in the form of cash or in-kind contributions in an amount equal to 25 percent of the federal funds provided by the award.

The RFA is being released prior to the passage of an appropriations act for 2018. Enactment of additional continuing resolutions or an appropriations act may affect the availability or level of funding for this program.
